Sumire was responsible for planning, selection and facilitation of bicyclist focus groups geographically dispersed countywide to gain their perspective of various types of bike and bus facilities existing in LA County and the quality of their experience interacting with buses under specific conditions (e.g. standard bike lanes vs. separated bike lanes vs. shared bus lanes). A similar series of city staff interviews in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Long Beach and Temple City was conducted to gain their perspective in terms of why and how certain design elements were installed and the safe interactions or challenges experienced by bicyclists, bus operators and motorists as they share the road. Both groups were also asked to comment on potential designs that might be considered as best practices in developing design standards going forward. Bus operators were similarly engaged by other members of the team. An online survey was also developed to gain expanded input from bicyclists countywide about their experiences sharing the road with buses.
